The Cedars of Lebanon

It was a terrible storm, with howling winds of up to 200 kph it rages throughout the night rendering my wife and me sleepless. The storm ceased at about midday the following day, thank God it stopped. The aftermath of the storm is another story, just in our little subdivision alone it created havoc one could just imagine not mentioning its effect on the whole of Central Luzon where the storm trod.

Debris were all around the place as mud and pieces of former parts of houses and things both animate and inanimate seemed to be stewed in a big cauldron of thick storm soup that spilled all over the ground. Since floodwater has subsided I decided to drive around and to my surprise a number of roads were impassable. The reason was that many of the big majestic trees that lined the streets toppled down blocking roadways and pathways.

Those images lingered in my mind wondering how and why those seemingly indestructible trees fell. With closer scrutiny I began to understand why while other trees of lesser stature were able to endure the fierce winds of the storm.

The answer to that lies hidden where no one can see it, the roots! Although its branches and foliage were impressive, its massive roots were not deep enough to withstand the battering gale-force winds of this recent storm. Those trees met its storm. But weren’t those toppled down trees similar to us? So much like our walk with our God isn’t it?

We people are like those trees strutting their branches and leaves in the wind like peacocks. We even seem to do all the right things, say the right words, wear the right clothes and even have that automatic close-up smile ready. Yes! on the external, oh man we look good, I say even impressive. But what lies beneath our skin? What lies in our hearts which is the center of our being where no one can see. Are our hearts deeply anchored in the sure foundation of God and God’s Word?

Or is it just clinging and just hanging on, and when a stronger wind blows it looses its moorings and comes tumbling down. Have I deeply planted and rooted myself on God, that no matter how fierce and strong the tempest lashes its whip I would remain standing not because I am strong, but “HE” is. This is a question I always ask myself, and it’s worth asking yourself too.

So, how do we deepen our roots and be like the Cedars of Lebanon. What comes to mind are some suggestions and are taken from analogies from nature.

  1. Get sustenance from the right source: trees get their life-giving power from the Sun, that process is called “Photosynthesis”. For us the “Son” is our nourishment and it is called “Theonlysourceofpowerthereis”
  2. Well-watered trees stay evergreen as well as a man who is always satisfied and quenched by the living Word of God.
  3. Nutrients from humus and the soil enrich the trees making it healthier and stronger, our many experiences with people and circumstances when we learn from them make our lives richer and with depth.
And when all of the above goes hand in hand, “We” like a tree planted beside streams of life-giving water; its roots grow deeper and deeper which makes us healthier and stronger ready for any storm.(Read Ps. 1:1-3, Ps. 92:12-14)
