Living in our Jellyfish Fields

If you look at the bottom of this page, you’ll read that I am an animated films freak. I love animation whether it is a full-length movie or a 15 or 30 minute episodes on TV. Anime or otherwise, I get a high when I see cartoons or animation.

I particularly love those talking objects, talking teapots, tea cups, broomsticks, wall-clocks, saucepans, toys, cars, animals, insects, etc.

A few nights ago, I was flicking through channels and I happen to come across Nickelodeon and Spongebob was on. I love Spongebob Squarepants and the whole caboodle of Bikini Bottom. This particular episode caught my attention though. Spongebob was leaving Bikini Bottom and his friends to live at Jellyfish Fields because he decided that he was going to be a jellyfish. Of course his best friend Patrick was so shocked and heartbroken and tried to stop him along with his other friends but Spongebob couldn’t be stopped. He said, “I am leaving Bikini Bottom to live at the Jellyfish Fields for I have decided to be a jellyfish.”

Upon arrival at the Jellyfish Fields, he was very excited to see all the rows of jellyfishes in formation. Being the friendly sponge that he was, he went to each one and introduced himself, announcing that he has decided to become a jellyfish. Unfortunately, he got stung by each one every time he touched one. But still, he tried to fit in. Ate their food and adjusted and tried to adapt to their ways.

What he did not realize was even if he acted like a jellyfish, he can and never will be one because he is a sponge. Tried as he could he would not fit. He couldn’t eat what they eat. Eventually, he went back to Bikini Bottom and resumed his life, much to the delight of his friends.

Aren’t we just like Spongebob? Pretending to be somebody we are not. Living a life that is a lie, just so we could fit in or leaving the life we have because we are not contented with our lives. Hiding behind the masks we have created, we run after things or people because we do not want to accept the real us.

We do not know who we really are. If we are stripped right now of whatever possessions we have or if we are left all alone by our friends and even our loved ones, do we know who we really are? If you can answer this question in the affirmative in a split second, I salute you for you are one of those blessed people whose feet are standing on solid ground. But unfortunately, a percentage of these people who do not have pretences and do not wear masks are very small. Majority of us needs to belong to someone or needs to acquire things to be able to measure his/her worth. Even people who think they are well grounded are still actually living with the jellyfishes at the Jellyfish Fields.

Sometimes, it is good to be stung and be electrified by jellyfishes to shake us up so we will wake up to the truth of life.

As the theme song of Spongebob goes…”Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? … Spongebob square pants!” In this Christmas season and the coming New Year, may we all desire to start to live our lives truthfully in our pineapple homes!

A Blessed Christmas and a Fruitful New Year to all!!!

Just like yin-yang, the author has two sides. A feisty woman as fondly described by her husband and a self-proclaimed ‘warrior princess’ but with the gracefulness of a swan that glides in the calm water of a pond. She is also an animated-film freak.
